Live Review and Photography by Tim Darbyshire
Steve Hackett is the only member of the classic Genesis line-up who is keeping this music alive. He understands what this music means to people, how important it is and I’ll always be grateful to him for that.
Less than a year after visiting Canada with the ‘Genesis Extended’ tour, Steve Hackett was back in Ontario with his amazing band on the ‘Acolyte To Wolflight’ tour including two sell-out shows at the Oakville Centre.
Due to Nick Beggs’ commitments to Steven Wilson, his place in the band has been given to Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, Agents Of Mercy). Roine plays bass and guitar on this tour and presumably next year’s continuation of the tour. The rest of the band remained unchanged, Roger King on keyboards, Nad Sylvan on vocals, Rob Townsend on flute, sax, bass pedals, keyboards, Gary O’Toole on drums and vocals.
The show was divided into two halves, the first was the ‘Acolyte to Wolflight’ material with Steve and band showcasing tracks from the 2015 album ‘Wolflight’ as well as the his first album ‘Voyage of the Acolyte’ (released in 1975). Favourites from 1978’s ‘Please Don’t Touch’ and 1979’s ‘Spectral Mornings’ were also played.
The second set was primarily Genesis numbers, crowd-pleasers ‘Firth of Fifth’ and ‘The Musical Box’ alongside ‘The Cinema Show’ and deeper cuts like ‘Can-utility and the Coastliners’ and ‘After The Ordeal’.
Highlights for me were hearing ‘Icarus Ascending’ live for the first time, ‘Star Of Sirius’ and ‘Every Day’. I was surprised but delighted to hear ‘The Cinema Show’, also it’s always good to see Roger King do what Tony Banks rarely did – play the piano intro to ‘Firth Of Fifth’.
The whole show was nearly three hours (including a twenty minute interval), and it was good to see Steve playing so much different stuff to last year – of the Genesis set, only ‘The Musical Box’ and ‘Firth Of Fifth’ were retained from previous tours. Steve and his talented band never disappoint and left the stage to a predictable standing ovation from the enthusiastic audience in this intimate 450 seat venue.
Steve recently announced more shows in Canada next April 2016 – shows in Quebec, Montreal and Gatineau……..make sure you catch him if you can!
